Apple Says New Macbook Pro Has Only 16Gb Of Ram To Save Bat

To be 100% fair here (I dislike the new MBP), the Surface Studio uses the 6th gen chipset as well. The most likely reason for this is that both were developed before the release of the 7th gen processors, and/or because the quad-core Kaby Lakes aren't out yet

Don't mean to be the physical embodiment of the word 'actually' but,Current gen Intel chip has only recently come out, and doesn't come in quad-core. So you actually are getting the best chip here. I personally will not be buying this laptop, but I am holding out for the inevitable refresh next year where they (hopefully) listen to their customers and offer more RAM and the better CPU. In a year's time the industry will move to the new USB standard, so that's negligible.I might also be the only one disappointed that the larger trackpad doesn't support the Pencil.

Or running any VMs, like the entire software industry.

I still don't get why. I can't think of anything I can't do on my Windows laptop.
Cormie第 96 楼 ·
Well there are still good macs out there for that. I'd say this is more aimed at personal users who care more about telling people they have the new mac book pro, than whatever it can actually do.Edit: To all the people saying "but it's the pro version. It's for professionals"Bullshit. It's for people who want to feel better than "the average user".

Steve Jobs: Think Different.Tim Cook: Think Dongle
Toby_O_Notoby第 98 楼 ·
This is what gets me about this entire decision process. You literally cannot connect the top of the line iPhone with the top of the line MacBook Pro without an adaptor. So if they were going full USB-C, why not incorporate that into the new iPhone as opposed to the lightning plug? That way you could at least have USB-C-to-3.5mm adaptors so you can use the same pair of headphone for both your Mac and your iPhone. Why not include a Magsafe-to-C adaptor with your new laptop as opposed to paying [$40 for a third party solution?](https://griffintechnology.com/useaksafe-magnetic-usb-c-power-cable). Why is the 3.5mm obsolete on an iPhone but perfectly acceptable on a MacBook Pro?Oh that's right, I forgot, "Courage".

I think they do it wirelessly now or something.
KitsuneKatari第 100 楼 ·
You don't need an adapter you just need a new cable. I have a USB C to lightning cable for my iPad Pro which can be used for my iPhone.
HarithBK第 101 楼 ·
that and you can't use your lightning port headphones on a macbook. while not technically big issues it shows apple cracking and not beaing the "it just works" premium brand they have built themselfs up to be. the iphone 7 included cable should have been a lightning to type c at the least and the macbook pro should have had a lightning port for headsets.currently apple users are not properly experiancing the benefits of the wall garden while paying even more for it.

That might be exactly how Steve Jobs would phrase it to Jony Ive just before he shouted at him to get the fuck out of his office and get fucking serious and don't come back until after you've pulled your head out of your ass, if he were still around.

It really sounds like a repurposed excuse from the iphone and ipad lines.I would accept it there, they both have much smaller battery budgets and need to be more careful with things like amount of ram.
hummelm10第 104 楼 ·
I have 600GB of VMs on my MBP right now. I have 16gb of ram. I use multiple VMs all the time and the main reason I wanted to upgrade laptops is to get more ram. I can't use a desktop since I'm a traveling consultant and I am running out of ram with what I have now. I would happily take something slightly thicker to get more ram and battery. I didn't think my laptop needed to get any thinner from what I have now.

NorbertDupner第 106 楼 ·
I dunno. Thin means light, and light makes sense for something you carry around with you.
gwammy第 107 楼 ·
Probably not. A 16GB stick of ram probably idles at a couple hundred mW and peaks at a couple of watts.A tiny little screen and backlight could probably be dimmed when on battery and run in the tens of mW range. It could probably also be turned off.Turning off a stick of ram isn't really a thing, since DRAM needs to be refreshed frequently to retain the memory stored on it.Sorry for the lack of specific numbers, it's the weekend, I'm on mobile, and I'm not in the mood to pull up datasheets for proper references.
likeomgitznich第 108 楼 ·
Nope. To my knowledge, the MacBook Pro uses LP or "low power" RAM. Skylake mobile CPUs only allow 16GB of LP RAM. So if you wanted more you would have to use 100% regular RAM which is a power hog.
sick_riffs第 109 楼 ·
It's not a matter of another stick of ram, but rather the fact that they would need to put a new memory system in to handle the extra capacity. My guess is the current memory controller they use is low-power and can only accommodate up to 16 gb. 32 gb would likely require a much more power hungry controller. I'm not sure how much power the touch bar uses, but OLED is fairly efficient actually. Also, many people would not need that extra ram, but they would have the memory controller in the computer anyway drawing extra power for nothing.

They removed the glowing Apple logo to counteract it :P
jcrocks第 111 楼 ·
Not to ignore the karma train, but doesn't this have to do with the chipset they'd need to implement to address that amount of memory? I thought it was, at its core, an intel problem.
cryo第 112 楼 ·
LPDDR3, actually.
extreme_kiwi第 113 楼 ·
I think you read that wrong. The Skylake platform does not support LPDDR4 at all. It only supports DDR4 and DDR3L.
RobAmedeo第 114 楼 ·
That doesn't justify them not offering a variant that can go beyond 16GB with a different chipset like Dell does.
SketchySeaBeast第 115 楼 ·
Thank you. It sounds like a complete fabrication at first, but that makes sense.
Bringyourfugshiz第 116 楼 ·
Ram takes a lot of battery. Apple wants to use low power Ram (LPDDR) but the chipset that they are using this year, Skylake, doesnt support more than 16 LP. So theoretically you can have 64 gigs of ram in a laptop, but its going to be a huge battery hog thats not necessary
Ryan03rr第 117 楼 ·
Those laptops we call DTR's. And the battery life is fucking horrible. Sometimes the cpu's/gpu's can't even clock up to full throttle unless plugged into the mains.I had a w700ds with a old intel qx9300 back in 2010 and at full bore you could eek out about 25 mins of battery.. At low loads MAYBE 1.5 hours.

I need a new computer setup for a tax write off and I'm actually looking to move away from Apple after 12 years because of this.

If you want choice and to make decisions yourself, apple is the wrong company to buy from.
