Fuck how am I going to judge them now?!

I used to do that and it was as annoying as you'd think. Then I got a new laptop with 32GB of RAM and now I run Ubuntu in a Windows VM.

> There's still no Linux kernel though, and it's strictly command line. There's no linux kernel on a Mac either. The kernel is POSIX compliant, but you have to compile the program for MacOS, you can't just use the Linux ELF binary. In addition to this, MacOS is based on FreeBSD so there are differences there between the Linux way and the Unix way. Finally, MacOS is becoming more and more broken, see poll. If MSFT is able to fully replicate the Linux POSIX ABI then the MSFT solution is going to be better from a variety of POVs.I should also note that I am not a Apple hater. I love my MBPr, but the PC laptop segment has caught up to the build quality of Apple and so Apple needs to be able to differentiate itself and it can no longer claim POSIX as a differentiater.

Except it isn't. WSL runs native linux ELF binaries. That means you can use apt, zsh, poll, ssh, awk, sed, grep, and almost every other linux binary native on Windows. This means that you can do native linux development on Windows, full stop. It is still in beta, but the team that is working on this is active and constantly improving it. People have managed to get full linux compiled GUI programs up and running on it.If you think that WSL is simply cygwin then you haven't used the two side-by-side because they are night and day different.

In a laptop LCD panel the light emitters are positioned on the outside edge of the screen and illuminate a plastic light diffuser which is positioned behind the actual LCD screen. The light that exits the front of the diffuser is what we see when we look at the screen. Some of the light that exits the back of the diffuser is bounced back to the front but a large amount of light that exits the back of the diffuser is converted to heat. The small illuminated logo wouldn't make a noticeable difference in the brightness of the screen.

Can you even pay that much for a storage medium these days?Edit: yes, enterprise grade SSDs still run into the thousands. [Here's the closest equivalent in price](http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5EM3T05202)

We are officially running our own office suite, we're a major sponsor of Libre Office. The problem is, our clients don't use that, they use Office and it needs to be 100% compatible.

Those Eugene vectors! I heard those can only be calculated in Oregon! (I like your phone's take on your work.)And to be fair, if we need to fit everything in memory at once, we *can* just switch algorithms. We do work in big data, after all!(I'm going to get downvoted by people who fundamentally don't understand the work we do or the fact that I have dozens of Tb of data running through a typical algorithm for PoC, so it absolutely will not fit in memory.)

Unix underneath. Easy to install and run pretty much anything.Again, if all you want is a terminal, you can use anything.

Nah, they'll just release a dongle that allows you to connect two macbook pros together.

I quickly developed carpal tunnel symptoms after using trackpad gestures to swipe between multiple applications as a part of my workflow at a previous job. After I updated the drivers, the trackpad on my Zenbook isn't far behind my Macbook Air or Pro.OSX utterly lacks anything approaching a decent window manager. If your workflow requires multiple open applications, and you have to use a mac, get bent.Windows 7 has side snapping, Windows 10 has corner snapping and generally builds on 7's window manager. Pretty much every version of linux has similar window snapping *and* "always on top" options which make working in 3-4 different windows at once a breeze.

As a programmer who uses VIM, this was my very first thought. What kind of professionals are these machines designed for? I've been using VIM since college. I don't need Apple fucking with my workflow. My job has given me a MacBook Pro and I have a MacBook Air (with an SD slot, btw). I was looking to trade my Air in, but sorry, what Apple has rolled out is unacceptable. For now, I'll continue using what I have. When it's time to upgrade, I might just get a Windows machine and throw Ubuntu on it.

To me, one of the things I liked about Apple was not launching gimmicky tech. The touchbar screams "gimmick" to me. If I want touch, I'll use a real touch device. If I want to actually get work done, I'm not going to dick around with some half-assed touch bar. I love Mac but with the iPhone 7 and now this, this is two products of theirs that I'm not going to get. It's like they're trying to get rid of the user base that actually does shit with their products and appeal to people who are more consumed with how much thinner their products are.

Fun fact, Thinkpads have actually been featured in art museums for their design. Source: https://www.moma.org/collection/works/2168

Apple has ignored everything but the iPhone for a while now. Their computers are lacking, their Cinema Display is in serious need of a redesign and their "pro" products are just "more expensive models" and no longer mean professional. They know macs are trendy and stopped giving a crap about anything but that audience of trendy people.

Funny you should mention the T420s - that's the one I owned personally! Added a SSD and it was great. Also, poke around for the accessories to replace the DVD drive - you can put an extra battery in there instead of the disk tray, and get killer battery life.Favorite T420s fact: Despite being the "thin" version of the T420, you could equip it with *three hard drives.* Standard hard drive, DVD-drive replacement, and a MSATA drive as well!

> it can no longer claim POSIX as a differentiater.Apple don't really market POSIX compliancy. 99% of their users won't know what it is. It's the few technical users, the true pro users, who argue POSIX as an advantage (which it is).

I edited my post a moment before I saw your reply. Thanks. You're absolutely right that I've never used it.>People have managed to get full linux compiled GUI programs up and running on it.Huh. Microsoft's FAQ claimed that wasn't possible.
