>Chrome creates a separate process for each tabYet crashes just as hard as any other browser when a single tab crashes! :)

I'm a PC gamer and know my 16 GB is overkill unless I'm rendering video

Plus there's only so much value in optimizing on things that aren't your bottleneck. It is incredibly rare that I worry about CPU or memory at work because in general IO is the big bottleneck at work. So more often we're worrying about reducing the back and forth queries or reducing the amount of data we need to fetch vs. focusing down on super optimized data structures or algorithms in-app.You can't optimize everything since some things are just inherently trade-offs, and even if you could all the time spent optimizing is time not spent improving the user experience or not giving them better features.

9/10 times on a modern windows install that blue screen is actually your graphics card fucking up.

Desktop on Linux might not be as advanced as HAL9000 but I don't get the feeling it's out to kill me.Seriously though, running your own red hat fork might have been a bad idea. I saw an account manager's version of this and could not offer him a reasonable solution for his main issue because his open office version was outdated. Maybe he could have choose a less stable branch but if office out of the box was a driver if the idea it failed afaict.Maybe the part that was missing was changing processes away from office, maybe there was even an alternative office suite was part of this company's own dog food?

This is exactly right, I work with eigenvalues and Eugene vectors of large matrices and I need ram and cpu power to get that work done in a timely manner and the mbp really doesn't offer that.

Why is it that data science folks prefer Macs over PC?
第 430 楼 ·
Why is everyone so dependent on Macbooks? I work in IT as an external IT for dozens and dozens of companies, and not a single one use Macbooks for anything more than a personal play-thing. They don't even work on them, they use Windows machines for that.

Now there's the name of it: the MacBook Pro - Synergy. It'll start out as a slightly thicker unit with loads of battery life, and Apple will go to work making it thinner at the expense of battery life.

So are the keyboards. Fine as a laptop keyboard, I expect a less than perfect typing experience for the sake of portability, but holy shit. I'm at a desktop, so why is the default keyboard a fucking laptop keyboard? I've never used anything that makes my wrists cry out in pain so fucking quickly, it's unreal. At least I can change the keyboard at a desktop still.

Wait...when did MacBooks get rid of the SD slot?

Apple's current business model is to give you less and charge you more for it. Their end game is to sell you nothing for everything.
第 438 楼 ·
More pissed about not having a real fucking escape key. Does no one at apple use vim?

Technically I don't need an SD slot for the part that makes me a "pro" but I do really appreciate it. Actually, no, I need it, because my portable scanner is SD based and having to break out a cable really slows down my workflow for invoices and the like, which is critical revenue work.I can't think of a single way that USB C will increase or speed up my cashflow. Same for thinner, or "better colors." Literally the only potential workflow benefit to me is the touch bar, but that doesn't make the machine worth nearly $500 more than the prior generation.I priced out the same configurations on the "old" machine in the refurb store and the new one... $600 price difference.

Isn't that what the Air is supposed to be? And what about the regular MacBook?Aren't they pretty much all aiming at the same target group now? I don't get Apple's strategy here.

"Planned obsolescence."

Unless you mean devs for apple products and apps (where you absolutely need xcode and testing on an apple system), devs in general have many more choices than just macs, as a dev myself.

> Designers and artists on the other hand might start jumping bandwagons if this goes on long enough and competitors make solid portable desktop replacements that actually meet their needsHave you seen the new Surface products and Microsoft's marketing blitz on them? It's insane. Every ad features a creative professional saying "you can't do this on a Mac." And they're right.I'm not a creative professional, just an attorney who likes how Mac OS stays out of the way and lets me work with minimal interruption (Except of course Facebook and Reddit). The new one does nothing to enhance that for me. Maybe it's time to go back to Windows.Or will be when this machine hits end of life. It has already served me well for almost three years and I see no reason why it can't last another three, especially if I upgrade the SSD.

Lots and lots of actually educated people. It kind of baffles me how much people are willing to pay for an inferior product just because it has an Apple on it.To the ones who will say that their applications runs better under the Unix system, that might be totally true, BUT if you bought a non-Apple laptop for the same price, the hardware difference would blow any advantage that the MacOS has. While some owners of the MacBook Pro have made the right choice with it, they are the minority. Everyone else would be better of with a non-Apple model.

Hell, I picked up a top of the line T420s refurb months ago. i7 2640M, 128GB removable SSD (2.5 inch), 4GB ram, 1900X600, Nvidia 4200M. Now has 16GB of ram and 256 SSD, and still cost me under $320 total. Also, i don't need to carry a dongle for ethernet or VGA or display port (oh, who am i kidding, no one uses native display port).

Like I'd be caught dead at Starbucks with a laptop that didn't match my scarf!

Man, Thinkpad X1 Carbon wants to have a few words with you. That's a hot little laptop, and crazy powerful for the size and weight too.

Samsung even has an autoremove battery function. It just pops right out of the phone.
