do people really want a thinner laptop? its already thin enough, make it better in other ways.
TheKrononaut第 152 楼 ·
Guess they dont have as much courage as we otherwise thought

Apple lives by the creeds, "form over function," and, "get money, fuck bitches,".

I always get the mental note of "but why?!" whenever I read of their decision to go thinner for the sake of "looking nice". I want and have the need for well engineered machine that wouldn't break from slight roughness from my day to day handling. Also, I would love to have the machine go on as long as possible without running out of power. I need it to work well, long lasting power, toughness, and don't need to show off how sexy it is to strangers. This goes the same for mobile phones.
KazarakOfKar第 155 楼 ·
and charge people the same or more for a less powerful machine. Apples marketing people must be amazing.

It only needs to be one atom thinner so that they can call it thinner so really could have made it "thinner" and then put more batter in it stilll.

This is very annoying, they do this to their phones.... The single biggest issue on smartphones is the battery life. They have great cameras and everything else now... But the battery won't even last all day under an average user.Make the batteries larger and the phones thicker!

You can swap out a higher performing CPU without changing anything else, and only those who buy the upgrade pay the power penalty. They decided to use a LPDDR3 memory system in this model, and Intel only supports up to 16GB of that type of memory. To go higher, they'd have to redesign the motherboard to support DDR4, which draws more power.I can't see them wanting to support two different motherboard designs in the same model, so allowing anyone to upgrade beyond 16GB would force *every* user to pay the power penalty.Given that thickness and weight are absolute priorities for Apple, and switching to higher power consuming RAM across the line would require a bigger battery, it's easy to see why Apple chose to go for the low power option. Personally, I think they made the wrong choice here -- but that goes for a lot of Apple's recent decisions where device thickness seems to be an overriding concern. iPhone headphone jack, anyone?

Presumably it's throttled on battery?

People used to say 4GB was more than you'd ever need (for "most people"). The internet, OS, and applications are getting more and more RAM hungry every year.

No designer who lives on AI, PS, or any respectable pro video editing software will be using Ubuntu anytime soon.

There is a difference between using photoshop personally and using it professionally, professional grade design work requires more rendering and that higher ram capacity to be done efficiently.
moeburn第 163 楼 ·
Rendering uses as much RAM as you have available, since it's much faster to move the data back and forth between RAM and CPU to be calculated than it is to keep loading it from the HDD page file. Also virtual machines use as much RAM as an entire OS all on their own.

I have users in my office who claim around 24 GB of RAM just in Photoshop alone. For heavier production work using Photoshop, illustrator, zbrush etc, ram gets chewed up fast
Pascalwb第 165 楼 ·
IF you make 3D things 16 is small. Or video editing.
leros第 166 楼 ·
My development environment at work requires about 22GB of ram. I can't work soley on a MacBook Pro. If the MacBook had 32GB of RAM, I could ditch my desktop.
Oreoloveboss第 167 楼 ·
1 Panorama or HDR of raw photos can take up 8gb of ram in Photoshop or Lightroom. What are you using photoshop for? /r/photoshopbattles ?
ANAL_ANARCHY第 168 楼 ·
Except there's no regular USB ports. USB is still the most dominant connector, I can't imagine it's very practical to remove it from the pro line which should have better connectivity.
mrgandw第 169 楼 ·
No it doesn't. The new 15" is quoted as "up to 10 hours" battery life where as the first Retina MacBook Pro from 2012 was quoted as "up to 7 hours" of battery life. The new 13" models, however, regress on battery life a bit from the earlier 13" models.

This whole angle makes the [Razer Blade](http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-systems/razer-blade) series even funnier.

> Shareholders should be at their wits end with Tim CookConsumers should be at their wits end with Apple, but as of right now that hasn't happened yet. It might rather soon considering the way things are going, but until that happens Tim Cook isn't going anywhere.

in defense of the iPad Pro, it has essentially changed my college experience. The Apple Pencil is amazing for writing. I don't use any notebooks anymore. Just the iPad Pro. But it is absolutely not a laptop replacement. Definitely not good for that. But as a notebook replacement its fucking amazing.

All it means is you'll have to pay more money.

Like the PS4 Pro. How can a gaming console be a professional machine?
MaliciousHH第 175 楼 ·
I don't get the logic behind making the MBP's thinner at all. They already have the Airs and the the regular Macbook for ultra-portability. The MBP is supposed to be the workhorse model.
atrayitti第 176 楼 ·
god what i'd give for a phone that was twice the thickness but gave me multi day battery life :( i've NEVER found myself thinking "man, my phone is just so thick and heavy" I find myself thinking "man, why the fuck is my battery dead already" almost every day -.-
Sub116610第 177 楼 ·
Non-optical drive era here who has used the optical drive ones extensively as well. I think going thinner and lighter was a *great* idea...then. It became as thick as the MB Air was at its thickest point. Weights practically nothing, there was no need to change the physical design of it. People would have still thrown money at them with a better battery, better internal performance, and perhaps an even better screen. But no, for the sake of them trying to look innovative they're throwing darts at the board and it sucks. I knew this is the shit that would start to happen once Steve Jobs passed.
LePontif11第 178 楼 ·
But then there is the 5.5" inches + phones trend. The market was very accepting of those. In the begging it was in part for the improved battery life(i think).

I actually just got a chromebook and its fantastic. I have a $800 custom PC at home that does anything requiring a heavy load, and I needed something to go on the internet with long battery life to last a day through school. Chromebooks are very underappreciated IMO (plus it was only $100).

In software development fields in which developers choose their computers, Macs are pretty much all you see.
