Apple Says New Macbook Pro Has Only 16Gb Of Ram To Save Bat

That being said... the Surface Book's top configuration is also only 16gb, so it is definitely not just Apple limiting ram options - a ton of manufacturers are also doing it.

I'm in marketing but do design in some facets for a major movie studio. The files they send my would make my MB Air explode. My work issued top of the line MBP hardly opens some of these files.

Also designer... No way could I get away with an Air. I guess if all you designed was for web it would be a MAYBE. I do a lot of time critical print design and use a 27in iMac at work, 2015 15in MBP at home and I struggle on the MBP because it just doesn't have the same power or HDD space as the iMac. I really only use the MBP as my personal computer/ internet machine which is truly upsetting for a $2000 piece of hardware. All I really want is a 15in MBP with decent battery, lots of hard drive space and beefy specs. For >$2,000 I should be able to get all that and more IMHO. Too bad windows PC would be to hard to adjust my workflow to.

Most machines have the 6th gen. 7th gen just started shipping to OEMs. People don't realize its not as easy as "drop the processor in and call it day."
Theres:- PCB layout design- Ensuring it works with the OEMs BIOS- TDP considerations- GFX integration- Making sure the chip errata doesn't make your product unusable.- Kernel Support- Compiler support (GCC and Clang didn't have good SKX support until 5.1+/3.8+). Hell both, still generate AVX512f on skylakes that don't support it with -march=skylake enabled. You have to explicitly add -mno-avx512f.The list goes on... By the time a product is released with an N Gen. processor, the OEM has probably had it for at least a year.

TBH, thats a plus in my book (pun sort of intended). I hate being in a dark meeting room during a presentation, taking notes (or not paying attention) and having my machine light up the room.

I'm wondering for how much longer.

I use it because it's the only OS I know of where I can use both a Unix shell and Photoshop.Yes there's the new Windows 10 terminal thingy, but it has its limitations, and I'm not a huge fan of Cygwin.

Good Macs? Yea, like hackintoshes. After this they will get way more popular.

All the engineers on my team had to upgrade their Airs to Pros due the running CPU/memory intensive VMs. Running on VPN and the VMs kills the Macbook Pro battery from about seven hours to three. We usually refresh our equipment every two years, hopefully this will be enough reason for IT to approve Linux laptops.

I have a feeling Tim Cook has been thinking a lot about dongles.

You mean make it so the iPhone has the same plug as the new Android phones? HERESY. We are innovators not followers./s
rooktakesqueen第 197 楼 ·
If they incorporated USB-C into the new iPhone, they might have also had room for a headphone jack. We can't have that.
wanson第 198 楼 ·
You can't charge wirelessly though, and that's why i plug my phone into my computer.

Jony Ive is everything wrong with Apple. It'd be more forgivable if the designs looked better. They've put pretty above functionality, and missed the entire point of pretty in the first place: to enhance the machine/human interface.Bring back coloured icons to Finder et al.!
daveime第 201 楼 ·
Or possibly, "fuck me Jony, this laptop is thinner than I am!"
jz709第 202 楼 ·
Well of course you didn't think so, that's why we here at Apple thought of it for you, now buy it.
chazmuzz第 203 楼 ·
Why so many vms? What do you use them for?
McFeely_Smackup第 204 楼 ·
I'll eat my ass with a spoon if Apple ever makes a laptop with a hot swappable battery. Which is sad because one of these super thin macbooks would lend themselves pretty well to an external battery plate.
McFeely_Smackup第 205 楼 ·
While that's true, the pendulum has swung way too far to "thin for thins sake".

It's so annoying that a guy incorrectly saying "You're spot on" has nearly 10 times the number of upvotes as you giving actual correct information.

The refreshed 13" MBP without the little screen has more battery capacity than the one with the little screen. Mobiletechreview said Apple has to reduce battery capacity to incorporate the little screen.Edit: I should clarify that I was talking about the new 13" MBP not the last gen ones.

Sort of. Ram idles at <50mw, peaks at 4W. That was under DDR3, [although DDR4 isn't much better at idling](https://us.hardware.info/reviews/6678/10/skylake-ddr4-vs-ddr3-review-power-consumptionnigp).In any case, the 16 GB limit isn't justified for the market they're attempting to cater to. This is a mis-step as big as the headphone jack (love that this has one), and there's no real need for it.
sveiss第 209 楼 ·
Exactly. They went with LPDDR3 memory (normally used in phones) in this model, and the Intel CPUs only support a maximum of 16GB of that type of memory.Going higher would mean a switch to DDR4, which would require a different design of motherboard to accommodate the different connections -- the two types of memory aren't compatible. So every machine, even those without the extra RAM would pay the power cost.Since this is Apple, thinness wins above everything, so there's a little bit more shaved off the thickness of the machine and some flexibility lost to make that happen.
AlcarinRucin第 210 楼 ·
>My guess is the current memory controller they use is low-power and can only accommodate up to 16 gb. 32 gb would likely require a much more power hungry controller.Intel has been integrating the memory controller onto the CPU die for a decade. It's not replaceable.
